PANS/PANDAS

If you are looking at this page, someone you may love may unfortunately be experiencing signs and symptoms of a condition called PANS. (In some cases, when group A strep is contributing, the condition is referred to as PANDAS.)

I (Dr Knox) became interested in PANS/PANDAS after seeing some cases (more than I expected to see!) during my previous work as an inpatient psychiatrist. (And this is what lead me to train in integrative psychiatry.) As mentioned on the FAQ section, I do enjoy managing psychiatric symptoms related to patients experiencing PANS/PANDAS , but I want to make sure another functional/integrative provider with extensive PANS/PANDAS knowledge is leading the workup, as it can be very complicated. A directory of PANS providers can be found here:

This page exists to compile some of my favorite resources on the topic of PANS - hopefully you will find something here that is helping to you on your journey.

Is PANS even a real thing?

Yes, sadly.

"How do I know if it could be PANS?"

Here is the most comprehensive list of PANS symptoms that I've found:

My favorite books (clinician level) for management of PANS

Scott Antoine's "The Comprehensive Physicians' Guide to the Management of PANS and PANDAS: An Evidence-Based Approach to Diagnosis, Testing, and Effective Treatment" is an excellent book. (He and his wife are both physicians who became interested in PANS after their child developed the condition.)

Nancy O'hara's "Demystifying PANS/PANDAS: A Functional Medicine Desktop Reference on Basal Ganglia Encephalitis" is another excellent resource. She is also a physician with decades of experience working with PANS patients.

I will continue to update these resources. Also - please feel free to send me your favorite PANS resources.
